What can we learn from  some of the best song writers like “Here come the Mummies” and cool music? The Resource Entertainment calls them “One of the most inventive, bizarre, and flat-out fun party bands you’ll ever see! Here Come the Mummies, direct from the catacombs of Nashville, brings amazing funk from beyond the grave!”

I want to share 3 important PR lessons with you that I hope will bring more clarity, and how to build your business as a company owner!

Are you ready?

On Friday I was fortunate to meet a very interesting man who wrote songs for many well known artists. They were all Grammy caliber musicians. Many of them have won Grammys and some musicians were nominated multiple times.  He is very well  known in the entertainment world, a talented song writer, a producer and CEO of a publishing company, who was right under my nose here in Nashville TN!  During the meeting, we talked about our vision. We talked about being different and making a difference. We talked about being remembered, recognized and appreciated.

We must be different in order to make a difference

While talking about the project, I listened to a group called “Here come the Mummies'” during our mid morning presentation while he shared their story.  Theirs is a story about friends from a famous college who always wanted to play music together.  However, their careers took them in different directions. Each of them have won over 23 Grammys combined! Needless to say, each of them became famous.

But…

The dream to play together and feel alive never died! They decided to join together and secretly change their identities, creating a new persona with a new story and new songs! The group, “Here come the mummies was born…I thought how creative it was to do something like that. What amazed me the most was the fact that they NEVER gave up on their dream to play together. They changed the route… they formed a new plan! They became different and showed the world what ANYONE could do! The lesson learned?… the persona is important to be remembered by. The story of the group’s creation and their story of loyal friendship and faith was priceless! Their persona is what people remember. They wrote their own song, so to speak.  No one is like them!

Another important lesson I learned was that to be successful, skills are not the main focus. It was the story, the song that mattered the most, the song that took some musicians from being broke, working as waiters to selling half of a million CDs and being a # 1 hit !

This producer – songwriter and I talked about powerful, Grammy caliber voices that artists have. He said, ” The voice does not matter if the song is bad.  The SONG makes you popular and NOT your skills or your talent. People hum the songs we write when you pull up to the gas station to fill the gas tank. That song becomes THEIRS!”

In the world of PR I can say your story makes you famous. Most often, people become famous because of their story, not their rating, credibility or special talents. What is your story? Lets talk…

I remember a saying…Your success creates publicity…Yes it can be applied to celebs we know..I was fortunate to meet Mr James Cameron last year and have a dinner with him and his wife in Nashville where they hosted a fashion show and a fundraiser event.  Later this June I was honored to meet celebs at MTV movie awards from the media gurus, young actors to more established A- list folks.  They are known. They are being talked about.. Gossips..stories. publicity. They have THEIR publicity.  Their name and their success opens the doors and gets attention. They earned it with their success!!!

But…what about people who are brand new. Smart. Intelligent. Getting started.. What about them…?

Times changed. Business owners today use small communities and networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Ning even private communities such as Ladies Who Launch for women to make connections and build relationships.  As you know relationships are always been the main thing for big dawgs in PR world and marketing.

Without right connections you will not be able to connect to media and if your goal is to get booked on TV shows, be publicized in the top magazines and constantly get the best PR you have two choices.

  • One choice and best choice I believe is to hire a publicist, a PR professional who can do that for you, the ones who know how to do online publicity as well.
  • The second choice is to use your current connections and get the publicity on your own with a help of PR consultant who can guide you. To be honest it is not the best way to do it especially if your mission to get things fast in 3-6 months.
  • Here is one thing I want you to remember before you start promoting your product or service to the public and spend money on PR and marketing campaign. You must ask yourself if you were a customer would you buy from yourself.   People do not buy from ads they buy from loyal consumers. That is why the infomercials always have been the best method for business owners, innovators, product creators to push their products on t he market and reach more people.

It was truly the beginning of the PR wave. Then you might see them in the store saying “Seen on….” It was the best PR campaign idea to share stories and people bought it because they trusted the stories not the product benefits.

  • The magic word of a successful publicity campaign is TRUST. Building trust is taking time in every area of your life. Today in social networking communities we build trust by connecting with people we want to know and contribute to their community.
  • Familiarity: We give advice, comment and share our knowledge. We become the source of the information that they cannot get anywhere. Our blog articles, our videos are being shared with the rest of the world via social media. Customers feel familiar. They relate. They see the value and especially your business is built on the integrity. It is all good.

But…

However, some folks still believe that traditional publicity methods do not play big role today anymore. They shifted the focus in the direction of social media only forgetting one fact- the large companies became large not because of social media alone.

They built a successful business because they had a PR and marketing plan that included both traditional and new approaches. Classic methods never change. It is like classic music. We love it. You listen to it and no matter how many years ago or even centuries ago it was written, you still admire it right?

In the past years in my business I have used both approaches, traditional and social media PR approach. I also learned to reach out to media more to get a big buzz fast!

Southwest airlines, a bird, a smile and PR!

A couple of weeks ago I was on my way to Ontario California to spend few days in La Quinta with my friends. Little did I know that I would be stuck in the BNA airport Nashville TN for almost 7 hours.  I boarded my Southwest flight to Ontario and I was ready to meet my girlfriends in sunny California.

The plane was preparing for a take off and then suddenly I heard a strange noise! I knew we hit something. Was it a cart, a bird or what?

The flight attendant  flew across the aisle and hit her body against the doorway. The other flight kept joking saying, “we hit the bird”. I was quite surprised to discover that the plane had a technical problem and we could not leave until the replacement part arrived all the way from Chicago, as they announced to us with a big smile on their face! I was VERY thrilled to know that I would miss my flights and arrive to California very late.

I was very anxious and frustrated first, but then, I had a thought, “Southwest airlines can handle it…they have the best customer service!”

And yes they do. During my wonderful 7 hours in the airport, they changed my flights, arranged my connecting flights without panic, but with a big smile on their face!  They gave travel vouchers and delivered lunch-pizza! Who does not love pizza- our universal airport food!

I could have become very frustrated or even angry, but in the lounge I met amazing people! The waiting area became a community. People started talking, connecting, sharing their life and who they are! Some folks even celebrated their birthday while waiting for our flight with a glass of wine! Life was moving on.  We looked at it as a blessing to meet new people, get to know what they really love and want in life! We looked at it as an opportunity to say thank you to Southwest airlines management for taking care of us and protecting us!

But Southwest airlines kept on serving us with a big smile and a lot of patience! They could have said “Forget it.. Too many people to take care of !”

When thinking what Southwest airlines mission is about, I see the company with an amazing customer service! They are not just an airline company, they provide the simplicity in the way we fly. Less stress. More fun. Great service!

On Southwest website it says, “We like to think of ourselves as a Customer Service company that happens to fly airplanes (on schedule, with personality and perks along the way)”

The PR lesson: Know your mission. Know your customers. Deliver what you promised. Serve the public. Your brand will be much stronger!

Despite the fact that we had a technical issue, I will keep flying Southwest airlines.  They established the most important factor in running a multimillion dollar company- TRUST.

2.      Cost to market: How much does it cost to market on Twitter? ZERO. NOTHING. It is absolutely free targeted advertising method.  Twitter is about influence on people lives, careers, their daily life event.

3.      Give fun and educational tips: What we share and say, it can affect the outcome of their day. If you say something funny, you might have put a smile on someone‘s face. If you give a good business tip it might give them idea of what to do. I promote my SmokinHotPR newsletter to share with people what I do and how I can help them. My blog is about  educating my clients and students on creating online publicity. It is about helping THEM!

4.      Twitter is VIRAL. People who love you and care about what you say will repost your comments and share with others. That is why it is so important to build relationships. You must treat twitter as a big birthday party and everyone is having fun and enjoying time and sharing what they do naturally without sales pitches.

5.      Your profile description: Make sure your profile is fun to read. It is not a job application, so make it funny, easy to read and smile. Smile is the best advertising tool that cost nothing.  I often see people without faces who post on twitter. Common, imagine if you came in a mask to a birthday party hiding your face. What would people say? I would be scared to come up to a person in a mask without knowing who they are. Would you? Then stop using silly avatars and start being YOU.

6.      Build network: Follow people who follow the influential people you know.

7.      Being FAST: Reply to people right way if they said something to you and they are not your friend yet. Follow them back. Establish rapport within minutes. Give something valuable to them to read and think about.

8.      Show courtesy: Make comment before even clicking follow button. Get to know people first.

9.      Use tools: Use search feature to find people, topics you want to discuss in your niche and also bring offline clients online and follow you online or motivate them to start a Twitter profile.

10.  Time: Usually afternoon or late evenings after 7 pm are best time to get on twitter and weekends are always the best days to chat and share. Do not create new life on Twitter be you and set time for twitter life.

11.  Humor sells. Share with people funny stories, news and not much of what your business is about. They will see it in your profile. Interact first then approach if you want to.

12.  Spread love: Do not forget to praise people, compliment them.  How do you feel when someone says to you that you look fabulous in that red dress? I am sure you would feel amazing. We love compliments and naturally we give them back to others. Pay it forward.

13.  Questions, Questions and more questions. Ask and you will receive. People love questions. They are hungry for them. Ask and you w ill start conversation… Create dialogs first and make sure when they answer to you reply back to them. Courtesy is the best policy on twitter.

14.  Be the best host: Invite friends from other social network. For example, I invite friends from Facebook to follow me on twitter. They love it and it is fun. Very simple.

15.  Re-tweet: Don’t forget to re-tweet or repost what others say if you like it and it makes sense to you.  At least try to find out what people do first before you retweet. Read their profile. it is a must if you want long term relationships.

16.  Don’t forget your blog: Make sure you send all traffic to your blog, your free educational training that can lead them to your report page to build list. As my mentor said, “Loose control of your marketing” Give away for free without asking to opting to build solid relationships, book your speaking engagements, JV offers and more.

17.  Twitter link: Do not forget include links to Twitter on your blogs, your other social networks, your press releases, articles and other publicity platforms.

Last night I was at a Grammy’s Celebration party, which was held in Hard Rock Cafe, in downtown Nashville. I was watching Lady Gaga’s performance. It was fantastic!  When she received a Grammy award, her eyes were filled with tears. She said she could never have imagined that she could be something in her life. She did not love herself enough to believe that she could be a star…but something changed in her. She realized that she could be different, successful and unique… And love who she is today! Look at her publicity today!  Unique, controversial, brave and successful!

The Life of our dreams is not just for the  movies… it can be REALITY. My best friend Lily, who passed away over two years ago, told me one thing that was very special and it is a tribute to her…  She told me once, “Tatyana, never let anyone  or anything take away who you are. You are romantic, funny, witty, smart and a great mom!” It took me  a year to come to complete realization and I am very grateful to her for that.  She had a beautiful heart, and I do miss her greatly. She would have been 35 today.

I want YOU to believe that you are worthy of a better life, admiration and success! YOU have a unique set of skills that people want and need in this life.. Only you can make a change!

It will affect your business, your publicity and your branding. Love who you are today!

The 3 Cs of Positive Publicity: Clarity, Creativity and Creating New You!

Imagine if you can really be what you always wanted to be in 2011!

What  keeps you from becoming YOU and having it ALL? What makes you think you are NOT able to do that? What does your clarity, creativity and creating new YOU have to do with the best publicity goals for your business?

Last week on my brand new Nashville radio show “Life With Tatyana” I decided to cover the topic of “The 3 Cs of Successful Publicity” and talk about something that is often been so abused and overrated by many self help gurus, so that you do not get it. It is about CLARITY, CREATIVITY and CREATING New YOU!

We all can have clarity, be creative but the biggest problem is that we often do not know how to bring it to the light and see it alive. That is why during my radio show I decided to talk it about it and be very blant with my listeners. I am not a perfect speaker and I would prefer to speak the truth, the way it is because I DO care about my readers. My readers are my clients and loyal fans who support me and encourage me. I want to say thank you to you all!

First, lets talk about clarity…

When we think about clarity we think about a complicated journey to discovering it. Believe me I used to believe that it would take me decades to get clarity. That clarity is like wisdom – comes with age.. Well to be honest I want my clarity now and not when I am 75.  When I reflected on my life and my PR business in the past year, I saw my success was not about my A list connections, great fashion, new ideas, hiring a mentor and even few to coach me to do what I need to do. My business growth was MY DECISION. It was because I became very clear. Well, it was not always clear. I had days and even weeks of distractions and disappointments, but I made it. Clarity became such an important aspect of my life. It became the center of everything I did, planned to do and achieved.

Clarity brought desire to be more inspired. It gave me motivation to go after my goals and sometimes I did not know how. Clarity was able to force me to see myself in the new light as a strong and a powerful woman without a being superhero gal! I did not need to be a TOP GUN to become famous. I needed to be UNIQUE to public, to people around me and get them to laugh, talk and engage into what I had to offer- my ability to write, connect and make them smile. It was my ENERGY that got new clients moving into my direction. It happened because I was very clear where I wanted to be.

Secondly, the creativity became the most important element of my life and so it should be for you my friends. Creativity does not always mean you have to be an artist, a musician or famous fashion guru. Creativity means expression of words, feelings from the depth of your heart! It is about finding new and fun ways to express your personality. That is why it is important in publicity to establish persona. But again – if no clarity, no creativity means your persona will be fake one. Not good right?

Third, new YOU: Your new persona is about to evolve! Make sure you have become clear of what you are now, what do you want to  be known for in the next 90 days and the next 12 months and even next 3 years. Knowing  your inner goals and having peace that it is the right thing for your business whatever it might be is going to bring the most positive publicity for your business. Right energy, right contacts, right everything and it means REAL results and more income for you! Your publicity will always reflect your relationship with yourself! I know it on my own experience. When everything you do feels right in your heart, you will be more patient with yourself when it comes to understanding that a publicity campaign success is not overnight deal. It is a journey to discovering how YOU can be MORE for yourself and your customers.
