Facebook Timeline and Business Pages…A Good Combo?

From the desk of

In today article in Entrepreneur magazine, Facebook Timeline and Business Pages, Perfect Together the author Mikal E. Belicove, an Entrepreneur magazine columnist & contributing writer, was sharing his insights  on Facebook Timeline.  Can Timeline really impact the consumer engagements with brands?

I believe Facebook Timeline is allowing a business page to look like an open book rather a traditional business with the closed doors. Timeline can create a fun and energetic environment on your fanpage that can attract a new audience, converting them into loyal buyers. According to Mikail, ” brands are enjoying an average 46 percent increase in engagement per post. ”

As a PR strategist, I would recommend every company owner to become a story teller using photos, videos and share daily news. What a perfect opportunity to share your message, become a little more personal, relate to people issues and be a solution provider. It is about trust my friends!

I have recently discovered a very simple platform called Fanpage Toolkit.  I interviewed Aaron Friedman, CEO of Fanpage Toolkit and in our conversation he pointed out something very profound; “Small businesses and mid-size companies experience the greatest growth when they have an emotional connection with their customers. It starts with loyalty. Then, people trust. In the end, people buy. Fanpage Toolkit provides an opportunity to foster this kind of relationship with consumers and build a strong bond”.

You can create a fun and energetic environment using this platform that can attract a new audience, converting them into loyal buyers.

Here is what you need to keep in mind:

1. Be original.  Do not try to copy other brands and their style.

2. Use your own photos and create your own videos for your products. I prefer real raw content than polished borrowed photos. Take photos  everywhere you go. Show your personality!

3.  Communicate and talk to your customers. Ask questions.   Bring solutions fast!

4.  Contests are great for your exposure.

5.  Host a fundraiser for a good cause and involve the community in your work. Write press releases that shows your community work!

These little strategies for your biz can make a difference but you have to do them consistently. Nothing is magical!

Always ask to share. Always seek new creative ways. Learn from the best brands but stick to your story and be original.

How to get your business buzzworthy..

Are you  frustrated with your company image and its growth?

Today I had a skype meeting with the owner of IT company that had been providing VIP IT support to their clients. Basically they do everything for a client from a hosting service to SEO and social media. They know everything about the company . They handle the most delicate work.  CEO of the company said to me, “Tatyana, I  need to start PR campaigns for the clients ASAP to grow their exposure locally and nationally and we also need PR to grow our profits this year~!”

I smiled and I was very thrilled to see that ONLY serious biz owners totally GET PR.
Well, the question to you, “Do you want to know how to get your business buzzworthy and experience PR magic?” The truth is…PR success is in your hands.  I do not chase my clients trying to explain them why they need PR.  They know it is their “online insurance”. They need more buzz about their company. They want others to share how awesome they are and leave positive reviews. It is what will give me leverage and more media coverage in the long term. They know it is not an overnight deal.

I lead with a quote “Rome was not built in one day”.  Then do not think PR will make you famous in one day either

PR can be an incredible change-making business — and it is enjoying a well-deserved growth stage.

Companies and people are beginning to recognize that the old way of building consumer or public equity is changing.

IBIS World, a media research firm, says PR spending in 2010 was $9.73 billion and forecasts it will increase to $12.82 billion by 2015. The growth is in part due to PR’s ability to participate in a more nimble and flexible way with the new methods by which people consume media, including social media

Modern PR can help your brands innovate, market, and message well. My goal is to demonstrate that PR is for everyone.

It helps entrepreneurs earn more, small brands become household names, Fortune 500 companies preserve and grow their positions, and personalities and politicians maintain and increase their credibility and relevance.

And it helps all of the above rapidly increase brand value. If you have a great idea, product, or service, PR can do a lot to cut through the noise and let the world know. In my PR consulting sessions we map out a plan and I see more and more biz owners understand value of PR because of social media and what it can do to your business.

Most of you have blogs or plan to set WordPress blog.. Remember…Readers subscribe to blogs when they provide an informational or entertainment value so great that it would be a loss to not subscribe to it.Maki

Before you go into researching your niche keep in the mind the following….

  • Ask yourself one important question “Do I see myself writing on the topic/my niche a year or three years from now?” I am sure ….you know the answer
  • Do you have passion and high energy? Do you really believe in what you do? Blog readers will not feel good vibe about your blog when you do not believe in what you write. It will be too dry.
  • How to grow your niche readership: Without passion and long term commitment you will not experience the growth. Do not choose niche you do not believe it..
  • Your expertise and experience: Talk about your expertise in the area that you can talk about it anytime. You can answer to these questions while sleeping.

Here are top reasons to have a niche blog for your PR campaign

  • They have more loyal fans
  • They are more profitable
  • Loyal readers
  • Allow to brand yourself faster by focusing on a very narrow niche
  • You become a specialist and can talk about the topic. You have more power in the marketplace.
  • You can gain “the influencer” status faster
  • You get more PR and more recognition fast.
  • You market YOUR own products or related to the topic
  • You can pitch your own products to media. You are the expert in your field.  You have the influence in social media.
  • You become the advertising hub. Give about 12 months to get big advertisers pay YOU for  your space

In the next lesson we will talk about niche PR and what you need to have in order to create viral PR campaigns…

How to put an end to a fake passion… and regain true passion in life

When I think about the definition of passion and the best way to describe it, I think about a beautiful rose blossoming and showing off its beauty! It has the sweetest nectar and attracts everything and everyone around. It gives your body and the mind the most beautiful, electrifying feeling!
A Rose represents happiness. It is a flower of passion and love. When I look at a rose, I immediately think of a gentle flower with thorns to protect its beauty. It inspires people to express love and passion, to show gratitude and appreciation. Passion is the foundation of everything we do in life.  Only when we are passionate about ourselves and what we do, only then can we truly become beautiful people. This is what a rose does. It brings out the best to the world. It knows its purpose. It represents passion in life. It does not have to pretend to be something else.
Are you pretending to be something else? Are you exhausted to live  a life that looks good on a paper but in you heart tells you something else? The truth is when you pretend to be something else or suppress your dreams you will need to reignite your passion and sometimes, it can be a kick in your booty.
Over years I have had many discussions on the topic of “PASSION” and the journey to rediscover my own passion was a tough one, but it taught me one lesson- STOP LISTENING to what THEY SAY, because usually the ones who tell you what they think you should do in life,  do not even know what to do for themselves!
What is the TRUE passion? Passion that brings you great success or passion that is fun and just your hobby…?  How do YOU define true passion?
What if… you have NO clue what passion is…You have been told what your passion is or should be…You were around the people who were also told what their passion was.  You created an image in your head about what passion was supposed to be, thinking it was passion, until one day “that passion” was dying… You work hard. You think about problems. You do not enjoy your work. You resist. You fight  yourself and you still try to do something… but you feel no passion! Only commitment.  You want to do the right thing… but FOR WHOM?
We often think that when we are passionate, we must work MORE …and force ourselves to work MORE to justify owning a business  because somebody told us it was the way it should be BE. NOPE!…You do not need to slave hard and force yourself to create success. Passion is energy. It does not force people to do what they do not love to do or be around people who are totally different and do not understand them. The work you do that is filled with true passion flows with ease and joy! If you sweat in your office till 3 am, you are doing the WRONG thing, my friends… YOUR passion will slowly fade away.
When the passion within you is dying, it may be just a thought… Every time you feel your passion is dying it means it is time to look deep inside and remove the layer that does not serve your purpose. Only then you can experience a TRUE awakening!
People are often confused about the true meaning of passion . We think we are losing passion… So we have two things happening: We lose this “fake passion” and gain ‘the real one”. We think we lose passion, but instead, we lose the layer of who we used to be, the fake layer that needed to be removed so that we can experience an awakening…and feel ALIVE!!!
When the “Old, fake YOU” is dying inside, no real passion is present YET… you feel a hole in your heart and soul. A part of you is gone…you feel empty…and do not know what to do with that feeling of emptiness. But do not rush to fill that emptiness with something that does not serve your higher purpose. It is time to listen to the silence of the inner emptiness. Know it is the start of reviving your inner fire- your  true PASSION.

My personal advice: Recharge. Give yourself a break.  Do not rush to fill your heart and soul with things that are NOT of your core values. Do not do things to please others. When you recognize that the “fake passion” is gone, it is your first step to a new life. Do not go backwards. Give time to refill your soul with “REAL authentic passion”.

Often in the most serene quiet moments in your life will allow you to see your passion very clearly. Passion will keep your business grow and you will be able to build a solid brand! Without passion, positive attitude you will not believe in yourself and what you write. It means your readers will NOT believe what you say because they will FEEL it. TRULY ask yourself what you are and what you can do to impact others!

Can FREE Press Releases Destroy Your Online Reputation?

Are YOU totally frustrated with your PR efforts?

You spend your evenings researching, writing and thinking my press story rocks. You love it. Your biz partners love it..Your submit your story to a free press release site that promises good results. You follow the instruction and believe the hype..

However when it comes to managing your online reputation and your image you must consider few things.  When new business ideas come to you and you want to implement them as soon as possible you must have a good publicity plan to build  and manage your online reputation. Never be cheap. As we say in Russia “A greedy man pays twice” and trust me you will do that.

Do free press releases and free advertising sites do more damage to your business?

My clients often ask me, “Can FREE press releases brand your product? Do they REALLY work in achieving the SEO results you are looking for? ” Well the feedback we see is mixed. It depends on your press release format and  many factors and I will share why they do not work for long term online presence. I do not personally believe in free advertising sites.

However, they can be a good strategy to use a temporary tool in your PR campaign, and I will explain my reasons:

  1. Getting your content into Google News you need to distribute your news, your press releases to a site that is part of the system such as PRWeb or PR Newswire
  2. Not every free press release site can EVEN get your press release into GOOGLE NEWS. Then you spend the entire budget for writing professional press releases about your products, your company events or special announcements and you really miss the opportunity to be seen.
  3. For local internet marketing free press release sites are not good. They are not recommended. I do not recommend for local business marketing campaigns. You must submit to paid press release sites who can do specific local campaigns targeting  your area. These types of press releases cost around 400 dollars for submission alone.
  4. First of all free press releases sites are not welcomed by journalists, bloggers and other media professionals. They do not research them to get news. They are relying on authority sites as PRWEB or CISIONWIRE
  5. Secondly, you cannot add links into the body of your FREE press release. They will NOT allow it. They will ask you to upgrade to a premium service. You are better off using an authority PR services which will discuss in the  next newsletter. It will affect your press release format.
  6. Free press releases are your second choice. You must always submit to paid press releases companies especially if your goal to get into web searches, Google news and be noticed by media. If you even write two press releases a month you will spend about 600 on a press release submission with the best pr service as Cision Wire or PRWeb. I used them both. They will get your story in front of media and also can help to achieve good SEO results.
  7. They are not good for link building. You must have links in your press story that will lead your visitors to your blog and videos. With free press releases it is not possible. Readers will not be able to click on links unless they copy and paste. Some press release sites do provide links and a few allow you to customize the anchor text. (If you’re not familiar with ‘dofollow’ or ‘nofollow’ links, remember that is that the ‘dofollow’ or ‘followed’ links are the links that usually give your SEO benefit. Over 70% of free press release sites don’t give a link.
  8. It is not good for your image especially if you are a well -known author, coach, or a product owner to build your brand with free press releases sites. Bad for branding. Period.
  9. They do not work when you plan to do online reputation repair and when you want to remove negative content from the first page of Google.

Let me ask you, ” Are you truly clear about the direction you want to go? Where do you see yourself in few years? How do you want to look to others?”

I want to hear from you…

What is YOUR value? A Branding Lesson I Learned from the Burberry Fashion Line

We live in a world driven by a society that wants and demands discounts, coupons, buy-one-get-one, and countless other “freebies”. If someone can deliver this to them on a plate with a beautiful pink bow, it is EVEN better!… But wait… is it REALLY? As a business owner, I  understand giving discounts and coupons is a great marketing strategy to bring in new clients.

But…What about your value? Do your have skills, experience and a genuine desire to serve your clients? Do you train your customers to ALWAYS accept your discounts and free products? When is the best time pull the plug on discounts? Discounts can DE-value…

One day my husband and I had a conversation about companies offering customers free or discounted high-end products and how society has changed after 9/11. If you remember the automobile industry at that time was basically giving away cars, or selling them at 0% interest so you could finally get YOUR DREAM car! Often the most expensive and valuable cars were sold at the lowest prices. Was it done out of desperation or a way to make you a loyal customer?

Recently, my husband started working for the English company, Burberry, which is known for its trench coats, scarfs, wool coats and high quality runway clothing line. His clients know and expect high quality merchandise along with the best service, being treated and pampered with a smile, champagne and undivided attention. When we got on the topic of VALUE… he said “Tatyana, I rarely see customers come into our store expecting deals or discounts. If we hosted a special event, then they knew it was the best time for them to purchase an item of their choice at the sale price… However, these events happen only twice a year. My VIP clients know what to expect and they know they will come back. Burberry has built its reputation all over the world as a luxury brand and customers know the benefits of having a Burberry coat or scarf. The company’s designers know its VALUE and the customer respects that value.”

When you go into a Burberry store, the first thing you will see are scarfs, purses and accessories. Great items to introduce us to something more spectacular!  Their elegant sales professionals show confidence in their products. Good customer service makes the purchase extremely pleasant and beneficial for everyone involved.  Once they are hooked on being treated like a queen or a king they return, even if they are buying a silk scarf for a friend. Customers might also refer a future VIP client, who would spend thousands of dollars. We must always make the best impression with our brand. Build your reputation, maintain it and always strive to improve all you do!

I agree that when we put a value on what we know, do and provide the BEST to our clients, they will VALUE our work, our relationships with them and love us enough to give us more business. I believe that we can give discounts, but ONLY when you can afford it and ONLY when it brings value to your services/products. That is why we must start with a smaller item that we can offer to clients and then guide them to make a bigger purchase. You will see that in any high fashion boutique.

If you give a discount, they ALREADY know the VALUE of what you have to offer.  As customers, we must not demand free products or discounts from business owners. WHY? We take away their dreams, their value, their peace and something they have worked very hard to build. By doing so we steal our own joy and lose our identity and integrity. We must believe that we have a lot to offer with what we already know and that it can be a great starting point.

In summary I want to say, VALUE you and your talents. Do not think that because you do not have 20 years of business experience or you have not made millions yet, that you cannot start teaching, coaching and creating success, based upon your experience. You can do that by sharing your story, your vision, and your life experiences. People are waiting for it. Write a book, start a blog or start a video channel. Build yourself UP and then others will build YOU UP!

Tip: Charge for your knowledge, because then people will VALUE you.

Sincerely

12 Key Ingredients of Successful Publicity You Cannot Miss in 2012: Part 1

(My secret splurge- french chocolate truffle tart)

When it comes to cooking and baking I can spend hours in the kitchen creating various masterpieces. I love  new challenges and learning a new cuisine is like living in a new country.   NEW WORLD. NEW EVERYTHING.  I learned many techniques on my own and got few techniques from my amazing grandmother Elena. I love to bake and entertain my friends. I love to see their happy faces when savoring my food. They know when they come to my house for a dinner they will get the best food with the highest quality ingredients, and I will make sure it is perfect.

But imagine if I was careless about my cooking or baking and did not care what I put into the food I made and did not have a recipe or a plan? Last week I made a brand new recipe of a french chocolate tart. It was a big hit. My friends tried convincing me to start a cooking channel.  But…the point I want to make…

Have passion for what do you, enjoy entertaining your audience, love people and bring solutions. I love to compare cooking and baking with PR. Professional Chef gives the best and uses the highest quality foods. He knows how to make his clients happy.  But he also knows what ingredients  are best for a particular recipe. I say PR PRO is like a Chef PRO.

Have you cooked or baked anything without knowing the key ingredients? I am sure you opened the cook book, wrote down the exact recipe, went to the store with your ingredients list , came home and bake the tart.  What would happen if you forgot it.. I love baking. I know if I ever miss the ingredients in my recipes I would be really angry.

When it comes to establishing yourself as an authority in your niche you must have a business plan and it is better if your business plan has PR element. According to the research companies will be spending more on PR by 2015.  In 2010 companies spent almost 10 billion dollars on PR and by 2015 they expect it will be around 15 billion dollars.

The major mistake business owners make is that they leave the PR plan out of their business plan or  it becomes “just in case solution”.  Good PR plan can make a huge difference in your promotional efforts- bring you a better reputation, more targeted leads and increase your income. In modern PR world we have a few major factors that are playing a big role in giving your business mode exposure: SEO, social media and of course your rich content.

Lets talk about the key ingredients you must have in order to make your publicity work.

1. Reaching your audience.

You must think about ideal audience and not using a shotgun approach. It means you must know what media outlet can be interested in  your message and if their readers would love your story as well. Will it be beneficial to them? Focus on reaching buyers directly. It is the best way to go.

2. How much credibility do these media outlets have?

Are they reliable, trustworthy and a leader in your niche? Do their readers listen to them? Think about Oprah OWN network. She talks, and people listen. She is the SOURCE.

3. Choose the specialized publications.

They are more targeted and more open to getting information from the writer. If you target generic publications you will find it hard to reach to them with your message. It must be very narrow.

4. Choose the medium for your message:

Is it a radio interview, a written article or a video? Then you must decide where you are going to look for the right publications.

Earlier I recommended to check these resources to get media inquiries and listings:

5. Focus on the right angle.

You must learn how to write a good media pitch and approach media outlets. Knowing how to approach a media outlet or even a leading blogger in your niche you must be pitch savvy. Especially if your product is commodity you must know how to show the unique qualities or show the benefits that your competitors did not even mention. Quite often they do not mention and you can take advantage of that..

Make sure your news are strong.  Some companies make it sound like a nice story but media wants a story with news that can bring solutions, change and transformation. Example, company ABC runs ONE day sale on their hottest weight loss product  on a certain date…That is news and you must point out what they will miss if they do catch one time  special. Show it. Include bullet points what they will receive and how can they can have access immediately. Create urgency.

The most important approach is a service approach.. Show how to choose, buy and use product. Be the SOURCE for your listeners or readers.

6. Use surveys and test groups

You will be able to find out if your message is being accepted or rejected.  Send the message (press release) to your business associates and ask for feedback.

7. Make sure you have a media kit

It is very important part of your business. It can be downloadable or you can mail it to the media contacts.

8.  Tracking system

You must track your urls of your website when your readers click on the link to get a free report, an e-book, or even buy your products. Very important to see where they come from and how compelling your message is to your customers.

9.  Write your publicity goals for the next 90 days and 6 months and 12 months.

Remember your PR plan must be put together with your publicist or PR consultant. Without having a plan you will quit doing PR thinking it does not work for you. Understanding that it takes time to get your name known is a very important step .

10 Focus on the major stories and minor stories you want to cover.

Make a list of the top 10 stories that you must send out within 90 days and get to writing them. (Make sure focus on reaching buyers directly. Study buyers keywords and with good SEO you can get more online PR and leads)

11. Misconceptions.

What are the misconceptions your readers might have about your company? Think about it for a moment. Have you ever addressed them?

How do you think you can use them to get more attention? Use them to get  more positive publicity.

12. Write a list of your competitors

We do not bash our competition but we want to engage into the conversations with their customers or in some cases business owners. We want to share even common things and differences. Remember be polite and know how attack- I mean giving your opinions and facts. Never assume things but get the right answers. Your competition’s customers are watching you too.

13. Always discuss budget with your publicist

A publicist must know your budget for the next 6 months to a year and you must set it aside.  It shows you are committed to yourself and your team.  It shows how serious you are and plus it allows a publicist to create a flexible PR plan for you , especially if you have emergencies and need extra funds for your projects.  The tools, PR platforms are not cheap. The PR databases and PR management platforms will run between 5 to 10k a year plus other tools and services you might need  that can average about $500 to $1000 a month. The serious company owner will have 5k a month min in her or his budget.  PR is not a part time deal.
Love to hear your feedback and the part 2 is coming out on Jan 2 2012. Do your mini home work and follow the checklist I have just shared with you.

Look forward to know you more,

Tatyana Gann

How to make a perfect PR pitch to media that gets FREE publicity

Publicity can be terrible. But only if you don’t have any. Jane Russell

From the desk of Tatyana Gann

In my work with media contacts I always ask editors about their guidelines and their editorial calendars. When you know the guidelines you can have better understanding of their audience, their writing style. It can help you to find the right approach. If you are dealing with a blogger who has some influence in your niche it helps to read their posts, see discussions, comments and also to see if they have contributing writers and what they write about..

To get more visibility and more publicity you must remember one thing, regardless how cool you are, media wants great quality content. Without a good piece of advice from you your company, your product or  your service is not going to have a chance to get more visibility.  Make sure bring the advice that has a great value.

Few days ago I spoke with a young internet marketer who shared with me his  story how he became very successful using direct mail method with a very little use of internet, basically from rags to riches story…I told him that to media the story means nothing.  It does not mean the story is not good but media professionals get stories like that all the time! They want a solid advice. They want  some valuable information that their readers can learn from, get some benefit to help them to grow their business or transform personal life.

I always give one simple advice- treat your readers, your potential customers how you would love to be treated. In your writing tell what you want to be told, use the exact words. Show appreciation, support and admiration of your customers. Show them they matter by bringing the exact answers they are looking for.

1. Always focus on how your readers can benefit from your story (it is not your product that matters to them but how it can make a difference in their life)

2. Think how you can inform them and entertain them. Entertaining  your reader with a good story, with some humor can do a lot of good!

3. Help your new readers to accomplish their goals, even small ones. Being famous is your second goal,  not first.  Help them to get success in life or business, you will bring it back into your life. It is a law!

4. Share 3 to 4 lessons you have learned from your product development.

5.  Few ways you paid attention to your customers and what determined to better meet their needs

6. If you landed a new client,  share your strategy and what you did to compete with heavy hitters or may you did not have to compete

7. Share stories in which you failed and what you learned from it.  Take your readers on a tour and explain what you learned, how you recognized your mistakes and what you did to correct them.

8.  If you landed a brand new business partnership, share news.  Share what you did  to help your new partner to see your vision.  Share the bullet points that formed the foundation for solid partnership.

The key is to show your readers how they can excel in what they do  and how they have a better balanced life, business, relationships, health and so on..

Remember the communication with your readers, engaging them in the story, giving them answers and being the source is a must.  My new friend John Morgan known among his friends as ” The Chuck Norris of branding” and author of Brand Against The Machine noted  at his recent book party in Nashville, “Stop being the service provider, start being the resource.”

I totally agree with it. PR and branding are so important. In order to have a great brand, build relationships, love people, show you CARE, give advice, always over deliver and build a great persona.  Always ask yourself “How do I want my customers to remember me in 10, 20 and even 30 years”

Image Matters: PR or Advertising?

From the desk of Tatyana Gann

Nashville TN

Today I will start with a quote, “Publicity is a great purifier because it sets in action the forces of public opinion, and in this country public opinion controls the courses of the nation.”  –Charles Evans Hughes

As a part of my usual weekly routine I make a visit to my local Barnes and Noble bookstore. Last week I was really evaluating my role as a publicist.  The questions I had in my head needed to be answered:

  • Am I alone in this battle to educate small business owners about the value of PR?
  • What is the best way to show them the role of PR?
  • Why do not they see the value while the major brands spend thousands of dollars per month and even millions per year on PR..
  • How can I provide better PR education and coach them to PR success?

So…

I wandered into my favorite aisle  Business Books and stumbled across the book on PR called “For Immediate Release: Shape Minds, Build Brands, and Deliver Results with Game-Changing Public Relations” by Ronn Torossian

It was a new book release, and I was very glad I found it..I started reading the book and I realized he spoke my language and I saw that my quest to show company the purpose of PR is not insane. We both had same vision: shape, mold minds of people, help them to see how it can increase brand value, establish online presence and increase the cashflow. It keeps companies out of trouble.

I got the book. I love it. It is PR Bible.

The next day I connected with Ronn Torossian on Facebook and Twitter and I loved his passion for PR, his determination to achieve the best results for his clients and building awareness about the impact of PR would have  on the companies future in the next few years.

When it comes to advertising Mr Torossian gives us a clear picture about the advantages of PR over marketing and advertising and how PR can establish the best company image.

By Ronn Torossian, CEO, 5W Public Relations

This is an excerpt from the best-selling new PR book by Torossian, “For Immediate Release: Shape Minds, Build Brands, and Deliver Results with Game-Changing Public Relations”

Public Relations’ Advantage Over Marketing & Advertising — Image Is Everything

PR can be an incredible change-making business — and it is enjoying a well-deserved growth stage. Companies and people are beginning to recognize that the old way of building consumer or public equity is changing. IBIS World, a media research firm, says PR spending in 2010 was $9.73 billion and forecasts it will increase to $12.82 billion by 2015. The growth is in part due to PR’s ability to participate in a more nimble and flexible way with the new methods by which people consume media, including social media. That sounds promising until you compare it with ad spending, which even after annual declines in recent years is about $210.5 billion a year in the U.S. The PR business is a tiny piece of the pie compared to advertising — there’s no reason why it can’t continue to grow and take advantage of its agility in the marketplace.

Unfortunately, a lot of what passes for public relations is lacking because it’s ineffective, irrelevant, and intangible. Negative (or alternatively, overly romanticized) public perception of the industry is fueled by pop culture portrayals that are completely unrepresentative of what real PR work entails. Consider, for example, the character Samantha in Sex and the City. No remotely successful PR pro spends half the day shopping and eating lunch and the other half seducing the UPS deliveryman. PR is far from a glamorous profession (though it can entail plenty of drama).

Various reality TV shows have also purported to show how the business works, and they’ve been way off base. It’s among the reasons why I have turned down two reality show offers through the years. All press is most certainly not good press. Disappointing results from badly conceived or lackluster PR campaigns have also made potentially great clients gunshy about hiring PR firms. There’s a concern that PR will be a money-suck with little or no return on investment. The blame for these difficulties can be placed firmly at the feet of an industry that hasn’t always kept up with changes in the world and hasn’t taken seriously its role as an integral part of a business’s success, including business and brand strategies.

Modern PR has to help brands innovate, market, and message well.

PR is a mix of journalism, psychology, and lawyering — it’s an ever-changing and always interesting landscape. There are many points of view about PR and what it can, can’t, and should do.

Public relations is an amazing business that offers people, brands, personalities, politicians, nonprofits, foundations, hospitals — you name it — an incredible chance to leverage their strengths and shape public opinion. Who better than a seasoned and forward thinking PR person to anticipate, analyze, and interpret public opinion and attitudes? PR’s biggest advantage over marketing and advertising is the seemingly independent third-party recognition and endorsement it provides — an incredible asset in a crowded, distracted, and confused world. Understanding this point is critical because the right publicity has profoundly more credibility than ads and marketing campaigns. The public feels that when an objective third party — a television show, magazine writer, newspaper journalist, blogger, social networker, or radio reporter, for example — features a company or person in a positive light, that entity is authentic and important.

Brands have to pay attention to personalization, interaction, conversation, efficacy, and social responsibility. Image is everything.

PR and Branding Lesson From Seth Godin Toy..

What can we learn from the best selling author Seth Godin?

One Saturday afternoon I found myself in the action figures section of a toy store in Franklin TN, while my boys were looking at their favorite toys when I saw something and I could not believe my eyes, the action figure of the best selling author Seth Godin.

To my surprise, it was the last doll on the shelf, and even though, they had other action figures of many famous people, Seth Godin figure got my attention. The creator got everything right about its design, even his socks. Well, but no purple cow!

Later that day I posted that photo on Facebook, and it got so much attention!  My facebook friends went WILD! One of my friends asked me, “Tatyana,  did they have a purple cow toy too?” Everyone was so anxious to learn if I got the toy and how cool it would be to use it for my training series. Tweeps on Twitter were tweeting my Twitpic Seth Godin photo.

One big lesson I learned that day that Seth Godin has become a marketing legend.  His impact on the marketing world brought fans around the world  and made him the best blogger, the best selling author of books from “The Linchpin”, “The Purple Cow”, ” Tribes”. In public relations branding is vital. His brand is recognized even in a small historical town of Franklin TN.

His style, his unique personality enabled fans to put his products in front of their friends and create more than just a customer base. It is building Seth Godin ‘s fans empire!

Seth Godin earned his amazing publicity on the web by being authentic .  He became known as the guy who speaks about tribes, a purple cow and why you must be a linchpin.  He is a true wizard, a philosopher that everyone respects online.

How to Choose The Right Niche By Angela Giles

Today Issue

By Angela Giles

Article: “Your Niche: How To Choose The Perfect One For You”

You have probably heard that term niche thrown all over the internet, on every webinar and event you attend and all the training classes that you devour.

Have you ever really wondered what a niche is?

If you go to a Thesaurus you will see terms thrown around like assignment, avocation, employment, corner, segment, category, and pigeonhole.

So if you are going to build a business, what corner of the market do you want to be a part of?

Here’s your first suggestion to finding a niche that will for you…

You must be passionate about and believe in it!

Did you know that people switch network marketing companies on average every ninety days?   Why?  Simply, because they do not believe in the product that they are selling.

In the home based business industry, you will often find individuals starting a business or fulfilling a niche because their friend told them how great it was or how much money they could make at it.

But the problem lays in the fact that they never did 100% believe in the product or service that they are marketing.  In fact, a person could believe the data about something but NOT actually believe in it.

This could be the case if you find yourself lying in bed at night, staring at the ceiling, wondering if your chosen product or service will actually work.

If you only believe in your product 95 % this may not be the niche for you.   Why?  You may find that you self-sabotage and then your business will ultimately fail.

You must believe 100% in what you are marketing, period.

Suggestion Number Two

You need to be using whatever you are promoting.  There is no getting around this.   When I began a Mary Kay business several years ago, the first thing I learned was that I had to really develop a love for their products and use them religiously.

So I dove head first into the company, learned everything I could, and used all their products!   Guess what?  I rose to a Director level within the first two months.

Suggestion Number three is you must have a long term vision for your business. Can you imagine having a long term vision for something you don’t believe 100% in and aren’t using on a regular basis? It simply won’t work.

There are going to be ups and downs in your journey, so set a long term vision and stick to it.

Along the way, you are going to be living your life surround by clients and people who come into your business in one shape or another.   Imagine yourself and where you want to be 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years from now.

Set a plan and work your plan.

Remember that it is all about you serving your clients and determining what they need.   Their needs will change from time to time as you get to know them.

Adjustments will continue to be made to your niche as you continue to happily serve your clients.

This is a good thing.

The money and the complete fulfillment of self WILL COME as it does when you feel that sense of accomplishment with a job well done.
