During Christmas I love to make old fashioned hot cocoa. I heat the milk, get my favorite peppermint chocolate hot cocoa mix and add Baileys to the cup.

The amazing aroma fills the cup. I feel relaxed, comfortable and special. I gaze at my Christmas tree with beautiful decorations and lights and see my candles flickering in the distance on the fireplace. What a beautiful moment to feel and capture!

When I think about the holiday celebrations, and how we try to impress our family, our friends and neighbours with what we do for Christmas, I immediately think about the way we add a special buzz and promote our online business.

Quite often we create a temporary buzz in our life only focusing on the desire to get attention. We do the same in business. We must realize that in order to get quality targeted leads we must show them consistency of what we do. How do you use Facebook for business? Does your profile have photos of you or images of birds, animals or your kids?

Few months ago I wrote a blog post about Who Took The Face out Of The Facebook It got a lot of attention and over 60 comments on my Facebook thread.   I definitely stirred up some buzz among folks who were hiding behind blank photos or fake images and who is trying to use facebook for business!

As a publicist I truly believe that the best publicity comes from relationships with our audience.  How in the world can we build a business without developing relationships?  A lot of us use Facebook for business, and I truly believe that Facebook is a perfect public relations platform with  every element of publicity, social media and social networking ever existed.  It has one mission – to connect, build and grow relationships with friends, coworkers, reconnect with family or build a business.

Regardless what your purpose, you will agree with me it is the best phenomena the world wanted to have for a long time. It allows you to do things you never even thought possible. Ready to develop a PR plan ?

You might ask me, “Tatyana, why do I  need a  PR plan and how can it help me to reach my goals in selling  more of my products?”

How long have you postponed putting together a PR plan? May be it is time to get moving forward!

In the past few weeks I have been writing press releases and researching what our publicity clients were really seeking to achieve with their PR plan?  I realized that in order for me to be effective and efficient at what I do I had to put my entire heart into it!

One of my clients Mari Ann has approached me to help her with a mini publicity campaign to share a story of one of her clients success story. To be brief, Mari Ann is the founder of The MARI Method, a permanent weight loss program that helps her clients to achieve long term results and stay healthy.  We have tweaked her first press story and sent it out to the media list of health, fitness, yoga, celebrity lifestyle reporters, editors and writers. Her press releases got attention, and she has received several emails from the editors asking for more information and even a request for an interview.

It was exciting to see how we could easily match her with the right media sources and bring the media exactly what they wanted. The message reached out people who have a passion and a heart for what they do.

Like everyone you have a story to tell the people on the web. You have got a pretty blog or website, but sometimes you feel stuck! The reason could be is what you do is not what you really love . It is only one good idea and nothing more. You become an advertising machine instead of powerful passionate storyteller.  People do not want the advertising that only sells and sells! They want real connections! They want to trust YOU!

But can they trust you if they feel you are wishy-washy about your  business?

Let me ask you a question. If you were a customer would you want  your product and services after seeing how it got presented? It does not mean you must act like a fool about your products and lie that you are in love with them. Being real and honest with yourself will help you to determine the best and clear PR plan.

Here are my two golden publicity tips today:

Tip 1: If you do not have a clear publicity plan like in anything you do, you will fail and your expectations for PR services will be low. Some people say you can write a press release in 30 min, but for me it is a piece of art. It is a masterpiece. It takes research of topics, trends to get the buzz going and find what people discuss on the particular topic and if it makes sense even to write press release.

Tip 2: Writing press releases for your business is one of great options to reach your buyers and media. PR plan is very important for a business owner regardless the size of their company.

It comes with territory right?

Have you felt you were stuck in the old marketing ways, using traditional newspapers, magazines, radio spots? I do not mean they do not work today. They do.  However,  there are many proven, classic methods that you can use that are cost effective, long term and stable.

What are the most effective  online publicity methods ?

Publicity Method # 1: Press Releases

Press releases are not old fashioned method. They are back in fashion and now you can write various types of press releases: from SEO, Video PRs to Social Media Releases utilizing all the social networks, SEO tools and video channels. You can FINALLY become your own PR and build credibility for your product/business/company brand.  Did you know press releases are more effective than PPC ads? Imagine how much people spend a day on PPC ads and think about how good search engine optimized press release can do for you short term and long term.

Before you write a press release you must follow this simple and basic formula:

Make a list of 5 Ws and H:

  • Who, Where, What, When, Why and How.
  • Who is doing what for a company, a person?
  • When, where and why they do it?
  • How is the product/event being done?
  • What are results your customers can expect?

Your Press releases must answer these important questions:

  • You must be specific and show why your info product/service is exciting for your buyers and what it will for them.
  • You must show how your new product/service can bring CHANGE to your customers life comparing to other products available online.
  • What are specifics of your product/service?Do you have case studies to back up the product offers? Show them

Guidelines to writing an effective press release

  • Determine the angle of the story: writing about event, product launch, expert revealing the truth.
  • Determine your buyers: what do they do on a daily and weekly basis and their lifestyle. Write what you know about them. It is your profile exercise. It will help you.
  • Your goal is to focus on your headline and press release description: that is what Google wants to see and what your customers will see. Create controversy and compelling to turn heads in YOUR direction.
  • The Purpose of Online Press Release: It is about seeking and informing buyers where to get what they need to get fast and efficient.
  • Your press release must be objective: write a press release in 3rd person. Writing about yourself will do more harm to you than you think. Keep your excitement under control.. You can express it in your quotes.
  • Write Quotes/your opinions: It is something you think about, said and mentioned to others. Use quotes as John Smith said, “your quote/opinion”
  • Media coverage: If you want to get media coverage explain why your product is unique to public and include few examples.
  • For Buyers: Give away  a FREE report, FREE e-book. Plus BONUS for the customers who act FAST.
  • 500 Words: Keep under 500 words but no less than 400 words. Your customers and media do not have time to read but they have to see if it is what THEY want. They will say YES or NO.
  • Interest score: If you were a journalist, a customer, would you read it and share with others? Make sure it has hot topic, debate, controversy. Good news is not boring stories that everyone talks about but what people are AFRAID to talk about.

  • Plus new method is Social Media News Releases

Publicity Method #2 : BLOGS:

  • Blogs are HOT. They do wonders for online publicity. Businesses use them to communicate, engage, share stories. They are more flexible than press releases. Blogs are personal.
  • Allows to build relationships with customers and other bloggers via consistent blogs posts .
  • No need to be a professional writer: Education, information and sharing news via blog in more informal way.
  • Great way to get recommended by other bloggers and social media pros to get fat piece of viral free traffic.
  • You can add many videos and images which are awesome for SEO purpose and brand awareness
  • My advice is to host your own blog. Use hostmonster.com, godaddy.com and other hosting services to get your WordPress blog set up. Once you set up the blog, now you can add content, articles, insert videos you made and even add press releases as a blog post.
  • Blogs are great to get ranked fast: with proper targeted keywords, links to authority sites with your fresh content published on  hubpages, ezinearticles and video channels you can get your content shared fast!
  • You must determine your niche and focus on only ONE area of interest. Don’t try to mix passion for cooking and your recipes with your home business or your passion for sports. You can create several blogs if you wish.  Write about what people want to buy over and over.
  • Focus on 2 keywords per each blog post to be safe. Make it natural. Search them using the tools. The less competion and more searches better it is for your customers to find your post.

  • Use images in your blog post to keep attention going. Google has advanced search tool on googleimages.com See advanced search and make sure that you use images for commercial reuse. Images are great for SEO. Make sure give them title that has keywords you want to target. Simple right?
  • Use videos in your blog post: some people call it v-logs. Transcribe your videos into content/article and it will allow customers to read and view it. Copy and paste html embedded code you get from your video channel .
  • Use syndicated content sharing communities:

Publicity Method # 3 VIDEO PUBLICITY

Here are some basic guidelines:

  • Set up a YOUTUBE Channel:

  • Make sure you add your photo and profile with solid description of what you do and what you offer that nobody has. Include links to your MAIN website.
  • If you have topics you have written about, break them into short mini stories and it will  be your video stories now. Use what you have at the moment.
  • Research what your completion does and what their viewers talk about and love about their product. However you must be unique and keep your own style. At least you know what people are searching. Keep it simple
  • Your videos must be short 2-3 min for promo videos and 5-6 min for educational videos.
  • Remember YOUTUBE is a teaser platform to get them to your site.
  • As with any blog story, press release you follow same rules, headlines and description must carry main keywords as first words in the sentence and paragraph.
  • Make each video description long enough. Use all the space they allow if you can.
  • I use simple camera to make short movies and I do use studio with my friend as you have seen my interview earlier today.
  • Windows Movie Maker is my easiest tool that I have got on my computer.
  • Get TubeMogul account. You can submit videos to different video platforms.
  • Find bloggers who love to use videos and comment on their blogs and their video channels
  • Use syndicated content communities

  • Utilize videos in the Online Calendar Community Listings: you can create events, connect with customers, talk about venues. Online Calendar Community listing services offer mobile marketing, event submission forms and more.  You will know who comes to your events. Videos just add personal touch. A lot of local and regional papers have this feature and make sure use them. Include small description with a headline and a link to video/blog post
