“If you have a good press release, you have a good media kit” Jill Lublin

When it comes to creating a magazine media kit or even online media kit you must follow certain guidelines.  It is not about making your press kit lavish or elegant. It is about being an effective presentation so media professionals get to know you and what to expect from you. In previous years major companies created fancy media kits and spent big bucks trying to impress media. However, you do not need to do that today and it will not cost much.

Here is what you must include in the media kit template:

  • Press Release
  • Company History or Story
  • Your Personal Bio
  • Questions That You Prefer To Be Asked in The Interview
  • If you have any related articles or video links included
  • Media Appearances
  • Photos
  • Endorsements and Case Studies
  • Giveways and Contests
  • Events

1. Lets talk about a press release.

It is very important that you know how to write a press release for your media kit.  It is a very important factor in getting a better press coverage when you send a press kit. Without a press release media pros will ignore your press kit. It is your main hub and your door opener to the targeted media sources

2. Your company story.

Very important to share your true story in 3 to 5 paragraphs

How did you start your company?

What is your mission?

What legacy do you want to leave for your clients?

What kind of achievements did you have?

What does your brand stand for?

3. Your Bio

It must be about your training, business experience, personal achievements, and show you as an expert in your niche. Do not boast but show what YOU can do. Plus add your social media influence description. Must be less than one page. Here is the example of a professional bio of my client Jessica Miller Merrel with Blogging4Jobs.com

4. Questions

You must write about 10 questions that you would like to be asked for an interview. When you know what to expect then you can have a smooth dialogue. The questions also can give your interviewer some other ideas what to ask but they are going to be the core questions.

5. Videos

You must include your featured videos about you, your products and your company.  Include the links.  Get domains for each video link. You do want to type the long youtube channel link with all the letters and numbers.

Be clever, creative and clear in your video message.

6. Your media appearance

If you were featured on the radio show, TV show or even local TV station and you have been seen in well known magazines and trade publications, make sure add copies of printed articles about your appearances with a link included in the article if you have it. You can talk about your podcasts, being a guest blogger, a teleseminar where you have been a guest or a host. Show what you have accomplished. Experience matters.

7. Photos

Include personal professional photo and photos of your interviews, tours and speaking events. Make an impression. Focus on the persona you want to portray. If you are a fashion consultant, make sure you are dressed nicely and professionally with an elegant touch. Nothing trashy just because it is in fashion.

8. Endorsments

List names of all professionals who endorse you, your clients testimonials and even case studies of what you have done for your clients.

9. Giveways..

People love free stuff. Share your gifts and point out where they can get it. It is on your website or blog or they have to join your facebook fan page show that to them

10. Include your business cards

Make sure your business cards do not have your face but your brand logo.  Make impression about your company and your products.

The most important tip: package your media kit professionally. Use the good quality folders with two pockets.  Add your photo or your company logo picture on the top of the cover when you put all in the mail. Use cool bright colors for your media kit sections.

My advice – send overnight with FEDEX service or UPS service and make sure they sign it upon receiving it.

Good luck and look forward to serving you

  1. Lots of value here Tatyana! I love this list…brings it all together! It’s such a topic we need to learn more about and yet we are all virtually clueless about PR…in so many ways and how it all works. Thank You!
